The Quezon City government has practically doubled its admission slots for scholars from public high schools for the next school year.
This after the QC council passed into law a measure that awarding the top ten graduates of all QC public high schools with regular scholarship under the city’s Scholarship and Youth Development Program (SYDP).
With the approval of the measure, the parents of the ten outstanding graduates of all the QC public high schools have all the more reason to encourage their bright children to excel and graduate with honors.
Authored by 2nd District Councilor Precious Hipolito Castelo, Ordinance No. SP-2071 S-2011 mandates that the top ten graduates of all public high schools in QC shall automatically be qualified as scholars of SYDP regardless if the student is already a scholar of other institutions or schools.
According to Castelo, as the city puts in place its poverty alleviation measures to help the less privileged among the QC residents, it is imperative that there be a long term solution like providing more scholarships.
Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista is pleased with the passing of the measure as it boosts the city government’s thrust of providing quality education to poor students whose parents can hardly cope with their daily expenses.
The city government is determined to settle all concerns in order to minimize the number of displaced youth in the city and upgrade the literacy among the QC populace, Bautista said.
To date, 5,689 under privileged but deserving students who graduated with colors benefited from the city government’s scholarship program and enjoy a scholarship grant of P80,000 including a stipend of P20,000 a year for students who finished secondary education as valedictorian and salutatorian, and P30,000 scholarship grant plus P10,000 stipend for first to third honorable mentions, elected Sangguniang Kabataan officials and alumni of the SB Center for Excellence (CENTREX).
