Pilipinas nag-uwi ng mga medalya sa Katatapos lang na 56th International Mathematical Olympiad, Ika – 36 na pwesto sa kompetisyon
Nag-uwi ng 2 pilak at 2 tansong medalya ang delegasyon ng Pilipinas sa katatapos lamang na 56th International Mathematical Olympiad na ginanap sa Chiang Mai, Thailand noong Hulyo 4-16, 2015.
Nasungkit ni Adrian Reginald Sy ng St. Jude Catholic School at Clyde Wesley Ang ng Chiang Kai Shek College ang dalawang medalyang pilak para sa Pilipinas matapos na umiskor ng 21 at 19 na puntos sa naturang kompetisyon.
Naiuwi ni Sy ang ikatlong pilak na medalya para sa bansa noong nakaraang taon mula sa kompetisyon at sa kanyang muling pagkakapanalo ngayon ay itinanghal siya bilang two-time silver medalist ng IMO. Samantala, si Ang naman na baguhan sa prestihiyosong kompetisyon ay naiuwi ang ika-limang silver medal ng bansa sa loob ng dalawampung pitong taon natin pakikilahok.
Si Farell Eldrian Wu naman ng MGC New Life Christian Academy ay kinapos lamang ng dalawang puntos para makapasok sa silver medal bracket ngunit naiuwi pa rin ang kanyang ikalawang bronze medal sa naturang kompetisyon. Samantala, ang pambato naman ng Holy Rosary College na si Albert John Patupat ay umiskor naman ng 15 points upang selyuhan ang isa pang tansong medalya. Isa namang Honourable mention ang iginawad kay Kyle Patrick Dulay ng Philippine Science High School- Main Campus matapos itong makapagtala ng 12puntos.
Sina Team Leader Dr. Ernie Jose Lope at Deputy Team Leader Louie John Vallejo ng Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) ang namuno sa pambansang delegasyon. Ang koponan ng Pilipinas sa IMO ay pinili mula sa 20 National Finalists of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad na sumailalim pa sa pagsasanay noong Abril at Mayo sa pamamagitan ng Math Olypiad Summer Camp sa pamumuno ng MSP.
Dahil sa tagumpay, nakakuha ang Philippine Team ng 87 puntos sa pangkalahatan at pumwestong ika-36 sa 104 na kalahok. Ayon kay Lope, ang performance ng Pilipinas ay nagbigay ng pagkakataon upang makalpit tayo sa pwesto ng mga bansang kasama natin sa Southeast Asia gaya ng Hongkong (ranked 28) at Indonesia (rank 29).
Ang IMO ay binubuo ng anim na tanong na kaiangang masagot ng mga kalahok sa loob lamang ng dalawang araw. Ang mga tanong ay mula sa apat na subjects ng math na geometry, algera, number theory at combinatorics. Bawat tanong ay katumbas ng pitong puntos.
“The six problems appearing at the IMO are certainly very difficult that even the easiest of these is several times harder than the math problems that are usually encountered by high school students,” pahayag ni Lope na nagsisilbing Team Leader ng grupo sa loob ng tatlong taon.
Ayon naman kay Dr. Josette Biyo, Director ng Department of Science and Technology- Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), na ang naturang panalo ay hindi na kaila dahil sa galing at talinong taglay ng mga Filipino math wizard at sa kapasidad nila na manalo sa international competitions.
“I am not surprised that we won given the credentials of the members of our Philippine team. They’re all proven winners and we’re very happy that they brought home a historic feat for the nation,” ani Biyo.
Pinuri din niya ang MSP para sa nakikitang oag-unlad at di daw malayong maiuwi na ng bansa ang kauna-unhan nitong ginto sa IMO.
“We are getting there and hence the government will continue its support to these types of programs to ensure that we not only produce winners in the competitions but also in the real world where we need more scientists and engineers,” dagdag pa na pahayag ni Biyo.
Ang partisipasyon ng Pilipinas sa IMO ay naging possible sa pakikipagtulungan ng DOST-SEI at MSP kasama ang Foundation for the Upgrading of Secondary Education, Metrobank Foundation, Inc., University of the Philippines Diliman – Institute of Mathematics, Ateneo de Manila University – Department of Mathematics, Social Security System, Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines, United Coconut Planters Life Assurance Corporation, and Holy Rosary College. Pinay Scientists on NSTW
Apat na matatagumpay na scientists at alumni ng Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Science High School (DOST-PSHS) ang magbibigay ng isang career-related talks sa July 27, 2015 sa Outcome 7 Exhibit Area, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia sa lungsod ng Pasay kaugnay ng pagdiriwang ng National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
Sina Dr. Ma.Corazon de Ungria, Dr. Reinabelle Reyes, Dr. Mary Ann Go at si Ma. Antonia Arroyo ang mga Filipina Scientists ay maghahatid ng kanilang mga natatanging kontribusyon at payo kung paano maging matagumpay sa larangan ng syensya. Sa paksa ng exhibit na “She for We: Highlighting the Role, Life and Achievement of Filipina Scientists in the Local and International Scientific Community”, itatampok ang mga nagawa ng Filipina Scientists sa larangan ng syensya sa bansa at sa buong mundo.
Sa pamamagitan nito, layon na magkaroon ng pagbabago at pagkakapantay-pantay ang mga kababaihan sa mundo ng syensya na kalimitang nado-domina ng mga kalalakihan. Magbibigay din ito ng panaty na oportunidad upang maipakita ang kanilang galing at talino. (Freda Migano)

Libreng Wi-Fi para kay Juan
Kasabay ng pagdiriwang ng National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), bubuksan na ng ICT Office ang pag-iimplementa sa libreng internet access sa mga lugar ng Quezon City at Maynila. Sinimulan ito noong July 22, 2015 kabahagi ng kanilang “Juan, Konek!” Digital Empowerment Program.
Napili ang lugar ng Quezon City at Maynila sa kadahilanang ito ang mga lugar na madalas na gawing pasyalan ng mga tao. Kabilang dito ang mga lugar ng Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City Hall, ang Philippine Coconut Authority (PhilCoA) Building, Social Security System (SSS) at ang Land Transportation Office sa lungsod Quezon at ang Rizal Park naman sa Maynila.
Inaasahan na ang may nasa 4,550 na concurrent users ngunit handa diumano ang opisina ng ICT na pagkalooban at mapanatili ang bilis ng connection na kakayanin pa ang may nasa 105, 000 pang users.
Makakatulong ang nasabing programa upang madaling maibahagi sa mga mamamayan ang mga impormasyon na kanilang kailangan lalo na sa pagbabalita at pagbibigay ng mga babala.(Freda Migano)

NSTW Outcome 8 S & T Disaster Preparedness Activities
Kasabay ng mga kabi-kabilang sakuna na nagaganap sa ating kapaligiran, isang programa ang binuksan ng Department of Science and Technology upang magbigay kahandaan at babala sa lahat sa panahon ng mga sakuna.
Sa temang “Ligtas ang Handa, Kaya ng Pinoy!”, nais ng programa na bigyan ng papel ang syensya at teknolohiya sa pagsagip ng buhay at mga ari-arian sa oras ng sakuna. Maglulunsad ng isang much-improved warning system ang DOST kaugnay sa lagay ng panahon, pagsubaybay sa lagay ng mga ilog at dam at maging ang isang komprehensibong atlas para sa West Valley Fault System sa paghahanda para sa lindol lalo na sa area ng Greater Metro Manila.
Kabahagi ang programang ito ng DOST sa pagdiriwang ng National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) na ginaganap sa nagyon sa SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex. (Freda Migano)

2015 National Science and Technology Week
Simula July 24-28, 2015 ay gaganapin ang pagdiriwang ng National Science and Technology Week sa taong ito sa SMX Convebtion Center, Mall of Asia sa Pasay City.
Kapapalooban ng mga exhibits ang pagdiriwang ukol sa mga latest DOST inventions gaya ng mga bagong likhang produkto at mga state-of –the-art equipments and machines na orhinal na gawa ng mga Pilipinong scientists and engineers.
Magkakaron din ng mga seminars, forums at iba pang mga gawain na magbibigay kaalaman sa mga dadalo at bibisita sa NSTW celebration.
Ang tema sa taong ito ay “Philippines: A Science Nation Innovating for Global Competitiveness”. Ang tema ay iniayon sa adhikain na maging isang science nation ang bansa at magkaroon ng kapabilidad pagdating sa international market competition. (Freda Migano)

Magsasaka Siyentista Rebecca Tubongbanua: Woman of brain and brawn
Guimaras is home to the world’s sweetest and delicious mangoes. So is the brain and brawn of the McNester Mango Products’ Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) Rebecca Tubongbanua, the woman behind the uniquely healthy, vitamin packed, and tasty Mango Sauce and Mango ketchup.
Rebecca’s products are deliciously tempting that you’ll find yourself using them on all sorts of food. The sauce and catsup create a different twist on the classic recipes such as spaghetti, dips for anything fried, and desserts. It even tastes great on pizza!
A former overseas Filipino worker, Rebecca, started her venture in 2003 with a modest capital of PhP7,000. She originally labored on calamansi puree, but then her attention was caught by the dilemma of the mango growers and farmers in Guimaras, whose sales to traders and exporters were limited only to “spot-free” mangoes. Those with slight defects were rejected, resulting in low revenues.
Such concern pushed Tubongbanua to develop and process the rebuffed mangoes and their by-products into something profitable.
Her efforts had a positive impact. She is now offering the unique mango products that she developed and formulated herself to mango lovers.
Through the help of Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) based in the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) in Guimaras, she toiled on high value commercial crop processing technology. The process is a science and technology intervention provided by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its TechnoMart Program.
The TechnoMart Program is a PCAARRD modality, which propels agro-based products from the communities to the markets.
Using the remaining by-products initially used for the dried mangoes, Tubongbanua was able to maximize the supply of raw ‘carabao’ mangoes, especially since these are very difficult to grow.
After several years of experimentation, she was able to perfect her processed products. The taste of her mango sauce and ketchup is comparable to the sweetness of the regular tomato-based sauces and dips but with a nice tang from the ripe Guimaras mangoes.
Her firm, McNester Food Products, which also carries her other mango products like the Mango Biscocho, Mango Otap, and Mango Piyaya, soon became the byword of processed commodities both here and abroad. Proof that a farmer can increase profits by value-adding their produce.
As one of the participants of the recent 13th World Food Expo (WOFEX 2012) held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Tubongbanua had the opportunity to present her products in this year’s biggest selling and order-taking event of all segments of the food and beverage industry.
Through the TechnoMart Program, the event gave her the chance to promote her products to a wider local and global market and has opened her doors to several prospects and opportunities.
Even if her business has already gone a long way from its backyard beginnings, Tubongbanua acknowledges that there are more things to consider and accomplish.
She shares her passion and success to other farmers by serving as resource person during trainings, seminars, field days, and investments clinics. She also provides technical assistance and hands-on training.
