The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines, the highest advisory body on issues concerning science and technology, conducted a roundtable discussion (RTD) focusing on agricultural extension on 03 May 2011 at the Traders Hotel, Pasay City.

Asterio Saliot, Director of the Agricultural Training Institute talked on the current status and challenges of agricultural extension in the Philippines. Dr. Agnes Rola, Dean of the College of Public Affairs (CPAF), University of the Philippines, Los Banos (UPLB), discussed the role of universities and colleges in making the agricultural extension system more effective and efficient. The Social Security System (SSS) has expanded the website services of www.sss.gov.ph to accept members’ benefit claims, loan applications and availments and employers’ contribution and loan collection reports starting on June 6, a top official said.

 

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emilio de Quiros, Jr. said the website enhancements would give members easy and fast access to SSS products and benefits and they can transact “anytime, anywhere.”

 

“We want to make transactions easier and convenient. Part of this thrust is to offer services right in their own homes or offices thru the SSS website,” he said.

 

The new features include online facilities for companies to submit lists of covered employees, contribution and loan collection reports and maternity notifications of workers.

 

Self-employed and voluntary members can also submit salary loan applications and maternity notifications through the website. The initial batch of online services involve applications…

The Department of Agriculture will conduct a series of agricultural farm machinery and equipment roadshow, dubbed as ‘AgriMach 2011,’ involving manufacturers, suppliers, importers and dealers of agricultural machinery and equipment, who will showcase their respective products to interested farmers’ groups and local government units.

The roadshow — with the theme, ‘Aangat ang ani at kita sa paggamit ng tamang makinarya’ — starts in Luzon, on August 23-24, 2011, at the DA’s Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech), in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. The second leg will be staged in Iloilo, for the Visayas cluster, on September 6-7, and on September 20-21 in Marbel,South Cotabato, for the  Mindanao  leg.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the DA plans to make AgriMach an annual affair to encourage farmers to mechanize their operations — from land preparation, production, harvesting, processing to marketing — to increase their productivity and incomes.

Pursuing sustained agricultural, fishery and livestock industry mechanization also intended to address the declining and ageing labor force in the agriculture and fishery sector…

LOYOLA-PANSOL FOOTBRIDGE.  Quezon City Congressman Jorge “Bolet” Banal, Jr. is assisted by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional director Reynaldo Tagudando in a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the inauguration of the Loyola-Pansol footbridge along the President Garcia (C5) extension (CP Garcia to Commonwealth Avenue). Built through the initiative of Congressman Banal, the new footbridge is intended to ensure the safety and well-being of pedestrians in the area, especially schoolchildren from the nearby Balara Elementary School. An estimated 500 families, especially those living in danger areas, will soon be awarded decent and comfortable housing units in Quezon City.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert M. Bautista signed a memorandum of agreement with Pag-Ibig Fund Chairman Darlene Marie B. Berberabe and Habitat for Humanity managing director Ricardo N. Jacinto for the city’s massive and socialized housing and resettlement program.

The signing of agreement coincided with the first meeting of the newly created QC Housing Board led by the Mayor as chairman, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte as vice chairman, Majority Floor Leader Jesus Suntay and Minority Floor Leader Eufemio Lagumbay as members, Urban Poor Affairs Office (UPAO) as secretariat, and urban poor organizations such as Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Magkapitbahay ng Manresa, Alyansa ng MAralita sa Nova (Almanova), Doña Lualhati Cojuangco Homeowner’s Association, and Urban Poor Council of Leaders of Quezon City.
